Rome 2006

Navona

The Piazza Navona is regarded as one of the most happenin' places in Rome, but it didn't do a whole lot for me. It is constructed in a long, oval shape reminiscent of a Roman racetrack (fittingly enough, as it is where the Stadium of Domitian once stood), with 3 fountains in it.

The big famous central fountain - Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (fountain of the four rivers) - was covered with scaffolding and construction materials, however, so I couldn't get a look at it. The other two - Fontana del Moro (Moor fountain, above) and Fontana di Nettuno (Neptune fountain, below) are at opposite ends of the piazza.

Perhaps I was tired after a full day of walking and enjoying history, but a tourist-filled, kitsch-selling hubbub didn't appeal to me. Maybe I'll have to visit it again and see how it strikes me then...
