Kalemegdan

Churches

Some people go to the grounds for the churches, including St. Petka chapel, named after the first Serbian female saint (saintess?). People go there for the miraculous healing power of the water...
to enjoy the beautiful paintings and leave a small donation for the caretakers

Others go to light candles at Ruzica chapel. We learned that in Serbia, the top row of candles are for prayers or reminders of those who are living, while the ones below are in remembrance of the dead.
The candles and icons are reputed to be located in the site of the oldest continually-inhabited church in Belgrade. It has room for reading and contemplation in front of pictures of one's favorite saint.
