We drew fancy pictures on balloons,
popped them, and then tried to "flatten out" the pieces to recreate the
pictures without any distortion. We found that it is impossible to recreate
a picture from a curved surface (the inflated balloon) on a flat surface
(the popped balloon) without altering it in some way - just as all flat
maps must have some intrinsic error built into them. Cool.
