roaming the world and enjoying the scenery...

Our long national nightmare is over!!

I simply can not think of a better way to express the “weight off our shoulders” feeling that the events of tonight have provided. We had neighbors come up to watch the inauguration ceremony, and it was something else. There were tears, there was laughter, there were responses to things people said. There were fireworks outside, and horns honking in the street. What an event.

The opening prayer was great, but Obama’s speech was unbelievable. Basically saying that so much of the last 8 years – the ignoring of science, the failed foreign policies, the destruction of the environment, the collapse of our economy, the disregard for liberties – was simply wrong, he set the course of our country (hopefully) back towards a more “American” path.

(As an aside, when I was telling people what I thought about calling this entry, I googled the term, and found this Onion article from January 2001 that is scarily accurate in its predictions.)

The swearing-in took place around 11pm our time in India, and I had invited Alea to stay up and watch. I was so glad that she could be a witness to history – and so glad that the world she grows up in will consider a US president who is a person of color to be ‘not a big deal.’ Tomorrow at school she might be yawning a bit, but the events of tonight were so worth it.

Whew. What a good feeling. How much fun to see things like this. Hooray for America!!!
