Morocco

Marrakesch

I had a chance to travel to Morocco for a conference in the fall of 2003, and took the opportunity to explore the city as much as time permitted. The souk was an amazing site, and was well-visited by locals and tourists alike.

Notice to travelers:

The fascinating thing about the trip was that between the 8 people from our school who travelled, we had skills in English, Serbian, Spanish, German, and Russian - but none of those helped us in a land dominated by French and Arabic. My rudimentery Arabic impressed the people much more than I had expected, and it turned out to be a real blessing. It was one of my first experiences in a country where their second language was not my first - and it was an unexpected struggle!! Advice - pick up some basic French before visiting - it will pay dividends!
Mosques were ever-present, of course, ranging from the stately and aged (left, in Marrakech) to the ultramodern and enormous (right, in Casablanca)

The Kasbah is an old fort/royal palace in the heart of the city that was pretty overwhelming in its opulence. It was easy to imagine the life of luxury that those lucky enough enoyed.

Even today, the glitter of brass, copper, and gold is reflected on the walls that have seen so much history.

Today, all sorts of wares are available for sale to locals and tourists alike. After an evening of shopping, the riotous square in the center of the souk serves up a dazzling array of kebabs, ready for the famished to pick and choose their supper.

Of course, since we were housed in the fanciest hotel in town, relaxing in the pool in the afternoon was the perfect was to recover after a late night out and about.

.
This might just be a place to revisit in the future!
