whether one knows it as the Hermit Kingdom, the Land of the Morning Calm, home of the 2002 World Cup, or as the feistiest of the Asian Tigers, it is indisputably a nation of contrasts and colors. It is a culture that prizes development and vibrancy, as we saw during the 1995-96 school year.

We enjoyed visiting the many Buddhist temples that are scattered in every corner of the country

We were lucky enough to witness the country-wide celebrations that took place on Buddha's birthday

Even the smallest temples were lovingly decorated with lanterns

Those lanterns were brightly lit at night

Other occasions were celebrated in different ways around the country:

All dressed up for Hanbat Day

Youngsters at the Suwon folk village

The flags waving proudly on War Day

Reenacting a Confucian procession in Seoul

and the crazy crush of people in downtown Seoul on New Year's Eve!

As a peninsula, much of Korea's food, economy, and life centers around the seas

This man decided that the port at Pusan was the perfect place to take a little nap

And of course someone's got to sell the fish!

And of course let's not forget about the children we were there to teach!

they all lived in huge apartment complexes

Lots of fun, but few smiles today!
